Supervisor Pam Slater-Price stepped down this month as Chairwoman of the First 5 Commission of San Diego County. As she departed, the Supervisor received an award for her service and presented a certificate of appreciation to Fred Baranowski of Escondido for his service as chairman of the First 5 Finance Committee.
In her remarks, Slater-Price reflected upon the accomplishments of First 5 during her tenure as Chairwoman, including:
o The successful fluoridation of the City of San Diego’s water supply in February 2011 -- benefitting the oral health of nearly 107,000 children ages 5 and under as well as pregnant women;
o Completion of the First 5 San Diego Preschool for All (PFA) Demonstration Project -- a program that has grown from serving 6 to 11 high-need communities in just five years; and
o The recent launch of a Family Literacy Campaign that focuses on educating parents about the importance of family literacy and encouraging them to read to their child every day.
